Abstract

This paper examines fairy tale motives in Sleeping Princess, a fairy tale included in Gift of Love by Bang Jeong-Hwan(1899-1931). In Gift of Love, Bang Jeong-Hwan translated the Grimm’s fairy tale Dornröschen into Sleeping Princess. This paper examines Sleeping Princess in light of the three motives of fairy tales elucidated by Lüthi: the “desire to have a baby” as a “sexual and erotic motive,” “meeting and conversation with fairies” as a “supernatural and magical motive,” and “wooing and marriage” as a “motive of simple union.” First, the desire to have a baby in Sleeping Princess is realized by the prophecy of the helper “Gaegori,” not by the birth of a baby from the sexual union of the king and the queen. The desire to have a baby, which is a “sexual and erotic motive,” was modified to fit the perspective of young readers. Second, in Sleeping Princess, the “meeting and conversation with fairies” as a “supernatural and magical motive” is achieved by the meeting of thirteen magical old women and the baby princess. Thus, the “meeting and conversation with fairies” as a “supernatural and magical motive” is mystically depicted in Sleeping Princess to encourage imagination and hope in children. Lastly, in Sleeping Princess, the secular fairy tale motive of “wooing and marriage” is achieved by the magnificent marriage between the pretty, good-hearted princess and the good-looking, cheerful prince. Such a marriage between the prince and princess replicates the general schema “oppression-salvation-happiness” of traditional stories. This schema illustrates the grand finale through a happy ending and the coming of utopia, which is an intrinsic characteristic of fairy tales.
