‘잠자는 미녀’ 판본 비교: 방정환의 「잠자는 왕녀」에서 중첩된 ‘신화’적 이미지와 ‘동화’라는 근대 어린이문학 이미지

본 연구는 방정환의 『사랑의 선물』(1922)에서 일곱 번째 이야기인 「잠자는 왕녀」 판본의 특징을 살펴보기 위해 지암바스티아 바실레의 「해와 달과 탈리아」(1634), 샤를 페로의 「잠자는 숲속의 미녀」(1697), 그림 형제의 「장미 공주」(1857), 그림 형제 본을 번역했지만 제목은 페로 본인 나카지마 고토의 「잠자는 미녀」(1916)를 비교하였다. 방정환의 「잠자는 왕녀」는 그림 형제 본이 저본인 「잠자는 미녀」를 큰 축으로 샤를 페로의 「잠자는 숲속의 미녀」에서 가져온, 잠자는 공주의 ‘천사’ 이미지와 ‘요술 할멈’에서 잔존하는 뮤즈 이미지를 ‘몽타주’ 하였다. 바실레 본과 페로 본에서 볼 수 있는 잔혹한 결혼후일담이 삭제된 그림 형제 본은 ‘민담’적인 모티프와 유머가 가미되며 간결한 이야기로 변화되는데, 이어 방정환은 ‘천사’처럼 잠자는 ‘왕녀’에게 잠자는 어린이의 고결(高潔)한 이미지를 중첩시키고, 구원자인 왕자가 “어여쁘고 쾌활”하다는 성격을 부여하며, 왕자가 왕녀를 입맞춤으로 깨울 때 ‘방끗’ 웃음의 천진난만한 표정을 강조하였다. 나아가 ‘행복한 결혼’이라는 결말에 해방을 상징하는 ‘봄’의 이미지를 덧붙이며 ‘동화’화 한다. 이는 ‘잠’이라는 ‘정지상태의 변증법’을 통해 “학대받는” 어린이를 세우고, 이중 독자인 어른을 일깨우는 것이다. 동시에, 조국의 독립을 열망하는 방정환이 잠들지 못하며 (옛)이야기를 번역하고 ‘합성’한 작품을 통해 만들어 가는 꿈의 ‘변증법적 이미지’이자 근대 어린이 문학의 씨앗이 된다.
Abstract
This study was conducted to examine the characteristics of the seventh story ‘Sleeping Princess’ in Bang Jeong-hwan(1899-1931)’s The Gift of Love. Here we compare Sun, Moon and Thalia (1634) by Giambastia Basile and Sleeping Beauty (1697) by Charles Perrault, Dornröschen (1857) by the Brothers Grimm. Goto Nakajima translated the brothers Grimm version into Japanese but used Charles Perrault’s title Sleeping Beauty (1916). The Sleeping Princess by Bang Jeong-hwan, the author makes a montage between the version of the brothers Grimm and the version of Charles Perrault. In Grimm’s version, the part of the post-wedding story (present in Basile’s Italian version and in Perrault’s version) has been deleted. It was transformed into a concise story with “folk” motifs and humorous style. In Jeonghwan Bang’s version, the noble image of a sleeping child is superimposed on the image of the princess sleeping like an angel. The author emphasizes the image of the “handsome and joyful” prince as the savior. Then, the princess smiles as she wakes up with a kiss from the prince. The image of innocent laughter “soft smile” also created as a specific element. The motif of “spring” is added at the end of a happy marriage to represent the metaphor of Korea’s liberation in the era of Japanese occupation. His style is a montage of the story that becomes the story for modern youth literature. The author translates tales for “abused” children, which is the subject of life, through the dialectic of motionless as “sleep” to awaken adults as a double reader. Thus, this dialectical image of the dream shows the first signs as the core of modern children’s literature.
