Abstract

This study examines the ethics of vulnerability in Korean children's literature. In Korean children's literature, good adults are largely absent. The absence of good adults raises the issue of vulnerability inherent in children's lives. Vulnerability refers to the possibility of being physically or mentally harmed by life circumstances. Children are more vulnerable than anyone else, and adults are often the ones who amplify their vulnerability. The absence of good adults jeopardizes children's vulnerable lives. Importantly, the protagonists of Korean children's literature do not collapse in the face of a precarious life due to the absence of good adults. This is where we can see the ethics of vulnerability that the child protagonist pursues. Sacrifice and dedication are realistic options for child protagonists in Korean children's literature to practice the ethic of vulnerability. With no adult protection, no way to rebel or resist a bad father, and no ethical or spiritual heritage to inherit, the protagonists of Korean children's literature had to grow up early. In this sense, sacrifice and dedication should be seen as an ethical choice to restore solidarity in life among vulnerable beings in response to their own vulnerable lives, as well as a fate given to them against their will. At this point, however, it is difficult to see sacrifice and commitment as an ethic of vulnerability that runs through the protagonists of recent Korean children's literature, who often reject the world constructed by adults and run outside of it in a form of escapism. The problem is that this is hardly an ethical response that can overcome the vulnerability of children's lives. Both children and adults are vulnerable and experience the same pain and hurt that comes with vulnerability in their lives at every moment, often against their will. And just as adults have a tremendous impact on children's lives, children's lives are impacted by adults. An ethics of vulnerability, then, must be based on reciprocal dependence. It requires children and adults to build a solidarity of empathy, comfort, and encouragement that enables them to overcome the pain and hurt that make their lives vulnerable. In the last century, child protagonists in Korean children's literature responded with sacrifice and devotion to adults who groaned at the violence of their times. In the future, adults in Korean children's literature must consider how to ethically respond to children.
