Abstract
In literature, the human body is used as a signifier to express the power and energy inherent in humans. From this perspective, the child's body can also be an important narrative device that embodies the child's image in a fairy tale. This is because a child's body grows and changes little by little every day, making it suitable for expressing the child's inherent capabilities and possibilities for the future. Additionally, when viewed from an adult's perspective, a child's body may appear small and physically weak. Therefore, children's bodies may be expressed as a means of internalizing adults' ideologies. Accordingly, this study attempted to examine the meaning inherent in children's body images by analyzing children's body images depicted in korean modern fairy tales, focusing on 「Mannyen Shatsu」 and 「Cheong-eo Ppyeogdagwi」, which are representative of modern Korean children's literature. Changnam's body image depicted in 「Mannyen Shatsu」 expressed the desire for modernization and the vitality inherent in children, and Sundeok's body image depicted in 「Cheong-eo Ppyeogdagwi」 exposes the reality of colonial Joseon society while also demonstrating resistance. It was being used as a signifier to induce . This means that the child's body image can be used as a writer's expression strategy to create an image of a new being called 'child' and to form the reader's individual ego and social consciousness.
