Abstract

The purpose of this study is to examine the aesthetic strategies of realism manifested in Korean children’s novels since the 2000s. Korean children’s literature, which emerged during the Japanese colonial period amid the backdrop of colonial modernity, has exhibited a fundamentally realist character. Throughout the subsequent historical ordeals, it has consistently pursued a realist aesthetics aimed at reflecting social reality. In particular, since the 2000s, numerous works have appeared that move beyond the conventional grammar of realist children’s fiction and seek to more fully embody the aesthetics of realism. Accordingly, this study investigates the defining features and developmental trajectory of Korean realist children’s novels, analyzing how such works have represented the structural contradictions of society while employing narrative strategies that take into account the sensibility of child readers. Writers such as Kim Nam-jung, Kim Jung-mi, Kim Nam-jung (repeated), Yoo Eun-sil, Kim Tae-ho, and Jin Hyung-min have overcome the limitations of earlier realist children’s fiction by adopting distinctive aesthetic strategies—such as anti-growth narratives, solidarity among marginalized others, the collapse of the father figure and the deepening of the child’s interiority, the contrast between the psychological reality of the “child” as a problematic individual and the logic of capitalism, innovative narrative devices, and an underlying sense of optimism. This study reveals that, since the 2000s, realist children’s novels in Korea have employed a variety of aesthetic strategies to provide young readers with both a critical awareness of reality and a sense of hope for the future. It is expected that these findings will contribute to further discussions on the development of realist aesthetics in contemporary Korean children’s literature.
