Abstract
In the study of children's plays, works created in the 1930s by proletarian writers who advocated realism to promote children's proletarian consciousness were named ‘proletarian children's plays.’ However, as the study of proletarian children's plays progressed, the discontinuity of children's plays in the 1930s became increasingly apparent. In order to overcome this limitation and to explore the spirit of those in charge of children's plays that consistently flowed from 'then and there' to 'now and here' children's plays, this study established the concept of 'realistic children's plays' and, based on this, attempted to confirm the characteristics and meaning of realistic children's plays in the genealogy of colonial children's plays. Realistic children's plays reflect the spirit of children's play managers to identify problems and social contradictions faced by children at the time, visualize them realistically and logically in the text, solve the problem and change children's lives in a better direction. Realistic children's plays in the first half of the 1930s presented children's hardships such as poverty, illness, and labor, and emphasized that these were not individual problems but arising from the structural contradictions of society. However, amid Japanese policies such as the dissolution of the KAPF and Boys' Association, the closure of children's magazines, and the revised Joseon Education Ordinance, realistic children's plays published in the late 1930s did not reveal the structural contradictions and causes of society while depicting children's poverty and labor. However, we must not miss the points of rupture, such as the Joseon people and traditional children's songs, and the irony of the cheerful children contrasting with the impoverished reality, which are revealed at the moment when colonial modernity became routine.
