Abstract
This study reassesses the poetic world of Suam(修巖) Ryu Jin(柳袗, 1582~1635), focusing on the 68 titles comprising 75 poems in Suamjip(修巖集), Volume 1. Suam was the third son of Seoae(西厓) Ryu Seong-ryong(柳成龍). He studied under his father’s disciples, inherited his father’s scholarship, and continued the family tradition, while also carrying on the academic lineage of the Toegye school. Throughout his life, he followed his father’s teachings, practicing loyalty and filial piety, aspiring to a virtuous, gentlemanly life, and pursuing an attitude of moderation and satisfaction, maintaining inner peace by living according to his means. In 1610, he demonstrated exceptional scholarly ability by achieving first place in both the preliminary and final stages of the Jeunggwang Jin-sa examination. During his official career, he faithfully and uprightly fulfilled his duties by improving land and tax systems, reforming local village regulations(hyangyak), and administering judicial matters fairly. At the same time, he encouraged local scholars in their academic studies and moral cultivation. In this study, the 68 titles comprising 75 poems of Suam were analyzed according to the themes of ‘aspiration toward a gentlemanly life’, ‘yearning for a life of contentment’, and ‘longing for one’s hometown.’ First, Suam employed natural motifs such as the so-called ‘Four gracious plants(四君子)’ to symbolize the virtues of a gentleman, reflecting on their moral qualities and using them as standards for self-cultivation. He also demonstrated an attitude of inner peace and self-restraint even in humble circumstances, striving for scholarly achievement while enjoying contentment and tranquility in nature, exemplifying the ideal of an unambitious, serene life. Finally, his works written during unjust imprisonment or while away from home reveal a profound longing for his hometown and a desire to return. Suam lived through successive wars, including the Imjin War, the Jeongyu War, and the Jeongmyo War, as well as political upheavals such as the Gyechuk Ok-sa and the Injo rebellion. Personally, he was also unjustly imprisoned in connection with the Kim Jik-jae conspiracy. Nevertheless, he continued his scholarly pursuits and self-cultivation, recording and reflecting on his life and ideals through his poetry. Suam’s poems concretely reveal his gentlemanly ideals, his attitude of contentment and satisfaction, and his longing and nostalgia for his hometown, making them an important source for understanding the inner world and life orientation of mid-Joseon scholars.
