Abstract

It is important to deal with the propriety(禮) and music(樂) of Confucius(孔子) when studying Confucianism. But propriety and music are expression and application of Confucius’ theory. It is better to know the main idea of Confucius’ theory, which is benevolence(仁). As Mencius said, benevolence is humanism itself. And poetry is the starting point to conduct benevolence. Although all Human beings are born benevolent, acquired greeds become accumulated in their mind as they grow up. According to Confucius, poetry helps us to get rid of acquired greeds. After getting rid of acquired greeds by studying poetry, we have to learn propriety. The essence of poetry is none other than benevolence, and we can live in harmony by conducting propriety. And we can recover and accomplish the benevolence by learning music, which is the final point of art. According to Confucius, art is not to practice some skills, but to accomplish the personality. And accomplishment the personality is the spirit of benevolence itself. Art is also the expression of good human nature, so it is important to recover the good human nature by studying poetry․propriety․music. And we can renew and modernize the poetry․propriety․music on the base of recovered good human nature. With this process, we can recover our own good human nature and also renew the poetry․propriety․music, which can be true art.
