Abstract

X-bar theoretic analysis of clauses bearing connective ending(‘connective clauses’) in Korean is proceeded. Korean language has seven classes of connective clauses, on Chomsky(1986)'s X-bar theoretic point of view. One of them is Complement, five of them are Adjuncts, and the rest one is ‘X' constituent’ taking a Specifier on its right side. This study has the following five main points. First, the overall domain of connective clauses of the Korean language is investigated on the systematic basis, and, as a result, the so-called 'coordinate'/'subordinate' distinction in the connective sentences is shown not to be sustainable on the syntactic ground. Second, three groups of secondary predicate connective clauses are classified and characterized in each part. They are Adjunct of V', Adjunct of VP, and Adjunct of I'. A secondary predicate connective clause has an empty operator(Oi) in the Specifier position and its co-indexed trace(ti) within the clause. It takes a subject or object as its ‘host’ in the sense of Rothstein's(1983, 2001) theory of predication. Third, a group of connective clauses is characterized as taking Specifier on the right of the clause in the entire connective sentence. This type of connective clauses imposes a kind of selectional restriction on the Specifier, as a consequence of its structural configuration. Fourth, it is shown, through a comprehensive examination on the distribution and interpretation of temporal morphemes in the connective sentences, that Korean does not have a tense system in the sense of European languages, favoring the thesis formerly proposed by Nam's(1972, 1975) study, contrary to the usual belief of the existing study in the Korean linguistic field. Fifth, the preceding X-bar theoretic points are further advocated by implementing a Prolog parsing system.
