현대 창작도자는 서구의 경향을 그대로 답습하여 혼란을 겪고 있는데 이와 같은 현실에서 한국적인 전통을 유지하면서 새로운 시도를 하고 있는 도예가 중에서 대표적인 인물중 한 사람이 艸石 權純亨이다.. 초석은 조선도자의 형태에 바탕을 두고 다양한 유약실험을 통하여 세계적인 수준에 오른 예술가이다. 그가 서양에서 습득한 釉配合과 施釉法은 서구적이지만 시유 후의 燒成効果는 지극히 한국적인 특징을 갖고 있다. 그는 무채색 톤의 한국도자를 환상적인 發色을 함으로서 유려한 유채색으로 바꾸는데 성공하였다. 그는 환상적인 자연의 이미지를 도자기 표면에 회화적으로 표현하고 있다.
Abstract
Recently Korean modern ceramic art is in utter confusion due to imitation and following of the western tendencies. Under such circumstances professor Soon Hyung Kwon is one of the representative ceramic artist who tries new endeavors keeping koreanistic traditions of ceramic art. Professor Soon Hyung Kwon attains masterly skill through various glazing test based on traditional form of Chosun ceramics. Though combination and test of glazing techniques which he mastered in the United States is western tradition, the effect of calcination on his ceramic works shows quite Korean characters. He succeeds to change achromatic color tone of traditional Korean ceramics into fantastic chromatic tone using by couplers. In other words he expresses picturesquely on the surface of ceramics.
