Abstract

Korean formative ceramic works have been rapidly expanding since the 1970s. Among them, thenumber of works based on geometric shapes is increasing compared to the previous one. This changeis due to the development of applied production techniques in addition to the existing productionmethods, and digital technology is grafted to enable the realization of forms that were impossible inthe past. In addition, the trend of aesthetic sense has steadily changed and influenced as it enters thepresent from the past. Therefore, this study aims to investigate the characteristics of productiontechniques and geometric shapes in Korean formative ceramic works. Looking at the productionmethod of the work, Kwon Oh-hoon is a traditional gypsum casting technique, Hwang Seung-wookis a gypsum casting technique using CAD/CAM and CNC processes, Shin Kwang-seok is a compositemolding technique that combines gypsum frame pressure molding with a spinning wheel and platemolding, and Lee Hun-kee is a variable frame technique using wood plywood. The characteristics ofthe geometric shape that appear in the work vary to some extent depending on the productiontechnique. Kwon Oh-hoon’s work repeatedly combined sophisticated geometric shapes, and HwangSeung-wook’s work realized precision, mechanical, and complete static shapes that are impossible byhand. Shin Kwang-seok’s first work, a combination of straight lines and polygons, crosses the planeand the three-dimensional, and the second work, a combination of curves and cylinders, captures thesentiment of the East, an invisible idea. By combining the organic form of the body with thegeometry of the hexahedron, Lee Hun-kee’s work expressed the finiteness and variability that aredestined for humans. While using the existing traditional production techniques in parallel, the newlystudied modern production techniques show a clear difference in precision and scale, expanding thescope of modern Korean ceramic. As a result of the study, it can be seen that each individualcharacteristic that appears in the work is classified according to the production method. In addition, itcan be seen that the characteristics of the geometric shape that appear in the work are different.
