도자예술은 오랫동안 소재와 기법, 소성과 같은 기본적인 제작프로세스를 중시해온 분야다. ‘실용에서 예술로의 확장’ 을 꿈꾸었던 1950년대 현대도예가들은 도자예술의 재료와 프로세스를 해체함으로써 전통도예의 고정된 질서와 관습을 뛰어 넘고자 했다. 그러나 도자예술의 현대성을 향한 이들의 실천과 방법은 곧 한계에 부딪혔다. 이에 대한 대안으로 1970년대 도예가들은 외부가 아닌 자신의 내부를 재탐색하고 재고함으로써 새로운 실천 방법을 찾았다. 이러한 새로운 물성 표현의 등장 배경에는 50년대 유럽과 일본 전위도예가들의 흙 실험과 70년대 등장한 환경운동과 대지미술이 자리 잡고 있다. 그러나 근본적으로 이들의 태동은 도자예술의 기본적인 재료와 제작 프로세스를 공예의 기능과 장식성으로부터 분리하고 도자예술 고유의 재료,기술의 단계를 독립된 객관적 실체로 인식하고 재정립하려는 자성적 노력의 결과였다. 따라서 본 연구는 70년대 이후 도자예술의 재료와 프로세스를 새롭게 정의하고 타진해온 현대도예의 새로운 물성표현에 주목하고자 한다. 세계 각국 주요작가들의 물성표현을 시기별로 고찰함으로써 이를 유형화하고 변모의 양상을 고찰하고자 한다. 결론적으로 70년대 이후 전개되는 현대도예의 물성표현이 도자예술의 재료와 프로세스를 독립된 객관적 실체로 해체하고 있으며 물질적 현상을 통해 세계를 투영해 내려는 현대도예의 변모된방법과 지향을 드러내는 중요한 표현임을 확인하고자 한다.
Abstract
The basic process like materials, techniques, and firing has long been considered as important in ceramic arts. The ceramists in 1950s who were influenced by Avant-grade movement of contemporary arts dreamed ‘expansion from practical things to arts’ and they tried to go over fixed orders and convention of traditional ceramics by dismantling materials and process of ceramic arts. But they soon faced the limitation of their practices and ways for the modernity of ceramic arts. For the alternative, ceramic artists in 1970s found new practical methods by exploring again and reconsidering themselves inside rather than outside. New appearance of expressing materiality was influenced by Avant-grade ceramists in Europe and Japan in 1950s and environmental movement and land art in 1970s. However, the birth of materiality expression was the results of separating basic materials and process of ceramic arts from crafts function and decoration and also self-searching efforts for recognizing basic materials and technical steps of ceramic arts as independent and objective substance. Therefore, this study is focused on new expression of materiality in contemporary ceramic arts which has newly defined and tried materials and process since 1970s. The study considers patterns and aspects of transfiguration by looking into materiality expressions of major ceramic artists around the world by period. As a result, the study is to confirm that the materiality expression of contemporary ceramic arts since in 1970s dismantled materials and process of ceramic arts as independent and objective substance. and also important expressions of transfigured methods and directions of contemporary arts which has tried to reflect the world through a physical phenomenon.
