Abstract

Poet Lee Wu-geol has begun to write sijos since 1973, and has established modernity of his sijos centered around critical insights about the modern society. His sijos have continued to deal with the matter of human existence based on critical thinking about the irrationalityof the modern society indulged in the logic of capitalism from the beginning. In other words, he has expressed the irrational reality of human alienation in the text of his sijos that individuals live as the being while forgetting their own existence and lacking in liberty and determination in the modern society where the exchange value system is ruling daily lives and consciousness. It is another main character of his sijos that the room for ontological thinking has been created within the text of his sijos based on self-examination. Accordingly, in this research, the meanings of Lee Wu-geol's sijos regarding the understanding of the reality and self-examination were examined focusing on the criticism on capitalism and ontology.
