Abstract

The oldest and major object of sijo(Traditional Three-verse) is nature. Even in modern sijo, nature is still an extension of a long tradition and an ideal goal which aims to assimilate and unite. However, considering the complexity and pluralization of modern society and the aesthetic orientation of today based on discord and irony, this is also an object to overcome. From this perspective, Lee Woo-gul, who is regarded as an a sijo poet who accomplished the task of "modern succession and transformation of tradition," shows a new modern perception and imagination of nature. It clearly distinguishes itself from the long-standing context of sijo, "Targeting civilization rather than nature, and deviating from the traditional imagination when targeting nature." This is a dialectical imagination that "reading reality from nature, reading pain from reality, and finally reading from pain to his ideal, and nature as his ideal" and shows the modernity of imagination. In this article, we examined the perception and imagination of nature that appeared in Lee Woo-gul's traditional poems, and the poetic aspects that embody this. Through this process, it is expected that while sorting out the nature appeared in Lee Woo-gul's sijo and how modern sijo will be able to recognize and poetically update the object of nature with new imagination and methods, and find their way forward.
