Abstract

Purpose: This study aims to examine the ritual function and symbolic structure of Chŏyongmu, a dance that originated in the late Silla period. It seeks to reinterpret the ideological foundation of Silla art by demonstrating that Chŏyongmu was not merely a form of performance but a symbolic practice for restoring communal order and purifying social disorder. Methods: Through an analysis of the Samguk sagi, Samguk yusa, and the hyangga “Chŏyongga,” this study explores the interrelation among myth, language, and ritual, while also examining the term “Chŏyongnang” in connection with the Hwarang and Girang traditions to investigate the relationship between social hierarchy and artistic practice. Result: The analysis reveals that Chŏyongmu originated as a shamanistic ritual designed to repel pestilent spirits and purify social unrest. Chŏyong’s act of singing and dancing to overcome communal crisis represented a symbolic performance integrating speech, body, and image, functioning as an efficacious ritual of byeoksa-jingyeong, meaning “repelling evil and inviting auspiciousness.” This structure reflects Silla’s integrated worldview that merged magic, religion, and art. Conclusion: The title “Chŏyongnang” embodies the ideological foundation of communal order through aesthetic performance, and its symbolic framework was transmitted as a Buddhist dharma-protecting dance in the Goryeo dynasty and as a Confucian court dance in the Joseon dynasty. Ultimately, Chŏyongmu functioned as a ritual form at the intersection of magic, art, religion, and politics, serving as a symbolic mechanism for purifying collective crises and reconstructing social order.
