Abstract
I examine the dynamics of insider ownership for Korean Chaebol firms from 2002 to 2010 and their relation to changes in firm value. I exploit the dynamic relation between ownership changes and change in firm value. I focus on large changes to avoid the problem highlighted by Zhou(2001). A further advantage of looking at the relation between firm value and insider ownership dynamically is that it is possible to decompose changes in insider ownership into ones caused by changes in holdings of shares by insiders and others caused by increases or decreases in shares outstanding. According to analysis of the Chaebol Firms, the following results can be obtained. Firstly, large decreases in insider ownership is more likely if the level of insider ownership is low and large increases in insider ownership is more likely if the level of insider ownership is high. Secondly, insiders who have large ownership are more likely to experience managerial purchases and share repurchases. Thirdly, I find no evidence that there is any relation between changes in q and changes in lagged ownership. Fourthly, I find that the positive relation between large decrease in insider ownership and changes q is driven by increase in the number of shares outstanding rather than decrease in shares owned by insider.
