배당의 라이프사이클이 존재하는가?

본 논문에서는 KOSPI시장에 상장된 제조업을 표본으로 1981년부터 2013년 기간 동안 배당의 라이프사이클이 존재하는지를 검증한다. 배당의 라이프사이클이란 기업이 창업되어 성숙단계를 거치는 성장과정에 따라 배당의 형태가 다르게 나타난다는 것을 말한다. 본 논문에서는 이러한 배당의 라이프사이클 형태를 설명해 줄 수 있는 이론적 모형을 도출하고 이를 기초로 실증분석 한 결과 다음의 증거를 발견하였다. 먼저 배당지급 유무에 대한 배당의 라이프사이클을 검증한 결과 기업의 연령 및 기업 성장할수록 배당을 보다 더 많이 하는 것을 발견하였다. 둘째, 배당성향에 따라 배당의 라이프사이클이 어떻게 영향을 주는지 검증한 결과 배당의 라이프사이클이 배당정책에 유의적으로 영향을 주고 있다는 증거가 발견되었다. 따라서 이러한 결과들은 기업 배당정책이 결국 기업 성장과정에 영향을 받고 있으며 또한 배당정책에 기업 성장과정이 중요한 결정요인으로서 작용하고 있음을 알 수 있다.

Abstract

This paper investigates whether there is life cycle of dividend policy using sample of manufacturing firms listed in KOSPI market from 1981 to 2013 year. The life cycle of dividend documents that firms have a different dividend policy through the growth path of time. This implies that sometimes firms could have higher dividend payout ratio or lower dividend payout ratio over different firm growth path. This this paper, we derive the theoretical model and implement the empirical test based on this theory. In theory model, we document that firm prefers the lower dividend policy at initial growth time, and also at mature time, firm better pay higher dividend to shareholders. Based on this theory, we find the following empirical evidences. First, we consider the no-dividend payer firm and dividend payer firm with 1 and 0 indicator, and then we find the evidences that firms prefer higher dividend payout ratio when they grow up to mature from incumbent at initial time. Second, to test how to affect dividend policy from life cycle, we also find that life cycle of dividend affect significantly dividend policy of firms. These evidences suggest that life cycle is a key determinant of many dividend determinants in dividend policy and firm manager should consider this fact to influence to stakeholder.
