본 연구는 기업수명주기별 외국인주주의 지분율이 배당성향에 영향을 미치는지에 대해서 알아보고자, 2007년부터 2012년까지 국내의 유가증권 상장기업(3,763개)을 대상으로 수명주기별 외국인주주의 지분율이 배당(배당성향, 자기자본배당금)에 미치는 영향을 분석하였으며, 본 연구의 결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 배당성향으로 기업수명주기별 외국인지분율이 배당에 미치는 영향을 분석한 결과, 기업수명주기에 따른 외국인주주의 지분율은 배당성향과 양의 상관성을 가지고 있는 것으로 나타나고 있다. 기업의 수명주기별로 살펴보면, 성숙기시점에 외국인주주의 지분율의 증가는 배당에 가장 많은 영향을 미치는 것으로 나타나며, 그 다음이 성장기 시점이며, 도입기 시점에 가장 영향이 없는 것으로 나타나고 있다. 둘째, 자기자본배당금으로 기업수명주기별 외국인지분율이 배당에 미치는 영향을 분석한 결과, 기업수명주기에 따라서 외국인주주의 지분율이 자기자본배당금에 양의 상관성을 가지고 있는 것으로 나타나고 있다. 결과적으로 기업수명주기별로 외국인주주의 지분율이 배당에 양의 영향을 미치고 있으나, 성장기시점에 외국인주주의 지분율이 배당에 영향을 미치는 것으로 나타나고 있으며, 도입기시점에서 외국인주주의 지분율이 배당에 영향을 가장 적게 미치는 것으로 나타나는 것을 알 수 있다. 또한 쇠퇴기시점에서는 잉여금을 이용한 재투자보다는 배당으로 사외유출하려는 경향이 큰 것을 알 수 있다.
Abstract
This research discusses on how foreign investor’s share throughout a corporate life cycle—introduction, growth, maturity and decline—impacts the pay-out-ratio of a firm. We have analyzed the relationship between the two focusing on Korea stock exchange(3, 763) from 2007 to 2012, and our findings are as follows: The number of foreign investor’s share showed a positive correlation with pay-out ratio, which equals to dividends divided by net income, over the corporate life cycle, the positive correlation was strongest at the corporation’s maturity and growth stage, while the lowest points were marked during the introduction period. A positive correlation was exhibited between foreign investor’s share and dividend-to-equity ratio as well consistently throughout the corporate life cycle. From these two findings we have concluded that foreign investor’s share and payout ratio move in the same direction. According to our analysis, the correlation was most impactful at maturity and growth and least effective at introduction of the firm’s life cycle. We also noted that in the declining stage, corporations had a tendency to create outflow of income by paying out dividends than to reinvest retained earnings to its operations.
