본 연구의 목적은 BT산업에 있어서 연구개발(R&D)투자의 효과를 분석하기 위함이다. 이를 위해 KIS2000에 등록된 기업 자료를 이용하여 BT산업에 대한 연구개발투자가 기업성과에 과연 어떤 효과를 미쳤는지를 분석하였다. 먼저 BT산업을 R&D투자기업과 비-R&D투자기업으로 나누어 각 그룹에 속한 기업들의 기업성과를 비교분석해 본 결과, 총고용 면에서 R&D투자기업 그룹이 비-R&D투자기업 그룹에 비하여 39%, 총요소생산성의 증가에서는 1% 이상 높게 나타났으며, 다른 기업성과에 있어서도 R&D투자기업이 더 좋은 성과를 보여주었다. 특히 연구개발투자를 하지 않던 기업이 연구개발투자를 하게 되는 경우(Start)에는 기업 매출액이 약 33% 향상되나 연구개발투자를 하던 기업이 이를 그만두게 되는 경우(Stop)에는 기업 매출액이 약 26% 정도 감소하는 것으로 나타났다.
Abstract
A growing body of empirical work has documented the superior performance characteristics of R&D firms relative to non-R&D firms. This paper investigates whether R&D improves firm performance, such as total factor productivity, employments, and shipments. The evidence is quite clear on one point: R&D activity improves firm performance in BT industry. That is, we find that firms that engage in R&D outperform non-R&D firms in BT industry in all possible dimensions: they have higher growth rates and are also more productive. These results are consistent with the hypothesis that R&D improve firm performance.
