본 연구는 프란츠 요제프 하이든(Franz Joseph Haydn)의 《스타바트 마테르》(1767)를 조반니 바티스타 페르골레지(Giovanni Battista Pergolesi)의 동명 작품(1736)과 비교하여, 하이든이 선 행 작품을 어떠한 방식으로 수용하고 창의적으로 변형했는지를 고찰하였다. 필자는 두 작품의 악장 구성, 주제 선율의 처리, 다양한 형식적 시도 등을 면밀히 비교함으로써, 하이든이 단순한 모방을 넘어 페르골레지의 음악을 자신만의 방식으로 재창조했다고 주장하였다. 이를 통해 하 이든 종교음악에 대한 보다 체계적인 접근을 시도하였으며, 그의 초기 종교음악에 대한 재평가 의 가능성을 제시하였다. 나아가 영향 연구와 상호텍스트성의 관점에서 18세기 음악을 어떻게 이해할 수 있는지에 대하여 살펴보았고, 하이든의 《스타바트 마테르》가 최근 연구 경향에서 어떤 의미를 갖는지를 논의하였다.
Abstract
This study examines Franz Joseph Haydn’s Stabat Mater (1767) in comparison with Giovanni Battista Pergolesi’s work of the same title (1736), exploring how Haydn assimilated and creatively transformed his predecessor’s composition. By closely comparing the movement structure, treatment of thematic material, and diverse formal strategies in the two works, the author argues that Haydn went beyond mere imitation and re-created Pergolesi’s musical language in his own distinctive style. In doing so, this study offers a more systematic approach to Haydn’s sacred music and suggests the possibility of a renewed evaluation of his early sacred works. Furthermore, it considers how eighteenth-century music can be interpreted from the perspective of influence studies and intertextuality and discusses the significance of Haydn’s Stabat Mater within current scholarly trends.
