Abstract
Alessandro Scarlatti (1660-1725) and Giovanni Battista Pergolesi (1710-1736) composed Stabat Mater in 1724 and 1736, respectively. While it is generally believed that Pergolesi’s work was commissioned to replace Scarlatti’s piece, research on the relationship between the two works remains insufficient. This study analyzes the distinctiveness of both compositions, arguing that each has its own unity. Scarlatti’s work demonstrates a strict unity based on the chamber cantata style, while Pergolesi’s piece exhibits a hidden unity within its diversity. To support this, the study examines Scarlatti’s treatment of the text, as well as the rhythmic and melodic characteristics. In Pergolesi’s composition, it explores the arrangement of tonality, the use of motifs, and the similarities in thematic melodies to reveal the unity within its diversity. Based on these analyses, the study also considers the influence of Scarlatti’s work on Pergoles.
