Abstract
This study explores a new perspective on the late music of Arnold Schoenberg(1874-1951), focusing on his religious works written after his exile. It examines how Schoenberg’s late religious music reveals an intricate interplay between personal faith, religious identity, and political conviction. The study interprets these works as a progression that starts with the recovery of religious identity, advances through the merging of faith and Jewish ethnicity, and ultimately culminates in a deeply personal spirituality. This study investigates how his religious and political concerns converge in his late religious works, through an analysis of Schoenberg’s late life and the general characteristics of his final compositions, Kol Nidre, Op. 39(1938), Dreimal Tausend Jahre, Op. 50a(1949), and Moderner Psalm, Op. 50c(1950-51) are given particular focus in this study. These three works demonstrate a clear trajectory in which religious faith serves as a medium for delivering political messages and engaging with the external world, yet ultimately lead to an inward turn through unresolved contradictions and spiritual dilemmas. Such tensions become evident not within each individual work but across their overall trajectory, embodying a distinctive form of “lateness” chracterized by the coexistence of conflicting values.
