Abstract
This Study explores the relationship between functional income distribution and economic growth in South Korea from 1970 until 2008. The analysis is based on a demand-driven distribution and growth model for an open economy inspired by Bhaduri and Marglin(1990), which allows for either profit- or wage-led growth. Canges in real wage rate have different effects on the level of employment and output. On the one hand, higher real wages increase demand, which stimulates output. On the other hand, higher real wages the cost of production. This reduces profits, which has a negative effect on investment. The paper builds on the estimation strategy of Hein and Vogel(2008). It applies a single equation approach, estimating the of redistribution on the demand aggregates and summing up these effects in order to obtain the total effect of redistribution on GDP growth. In the single equation approach we find that growth in South Korea has been wage-led. A one-percentage-point increase in the profit share results in a decrease of GDP by 0.3338 percent. This empirical result suggests that the wage-led nature of the growth-regime is much more pronounced in Korea, which is depend on a stronger negative effect on consumption. The paper is organised as follows. The second section describes an open economy model without economic activity by the state which is based on Bhaduri and Marglin (1990) as the theoretical starting point of the analysis. The results of single equation estimations approach to the effects of redistribution on growth in South Korea is described in section 3. Section 4 summarises the whole work.
