한국경제는 임금주도체제인가 이윤주도체제인가. 이에 대한 판정 여부도중요하지만 그 정도를 가늠해 보는 것도 중요하다. 성장체제의 전환 가능성을 고민하는 관점에서 더욱 중요한 문제로 부각되기 때문이다. 본 연구는 국내외 선행연구에서 가장 많이 사용된 바 있는 Hein and Vogel(2008)의 단일방정식 접근에 따라 한국경제의 임금주도성 여부를 재검토해 보았다. 보정된 분기별 노동소득분배율을 이용하여 외환위기 전후를 분석한 결과, 노동소득분배율 1%p 상승이 위기 이전에는 총수요를 0.08%p 증가시키지만, 위기 이후에는 0.26%p 증가시키는 것으로 나타났다. 위기 이전과 이후 모두임금주도성을 보이지만, 고도성장을 감안하면 위기 이전에는 임금주도성이거의 없는 것이나 다름없다. 그러나 잠재성장률의 하락 등 저성장 기조로 접어든 위기 이후의 기간에 대한 해석은 달라질 수밖에 없다. 그 전에 비해 임금주도성이 비교할 수 없을 정도로 강화된 것이다.
Abstract
Is the Korean economy wage-led or profit-led? Judging about that is important, but it is also important as well to gauge the extent. It is especially so when pondering upon the desirability of growth regime switches. In this point of view, we reinvestigated the wage-led property of Korean economy based on the single equation approach of Hein and Fogel (2008) which has been widely used in previous literatures at home and abroad. We modified quarterly labor income shares to see whether the economy shows different characteristics before and after the 1997-1998 currency crisis. We found the 1%p rise in labor share increased the aggregate demand by 0.08%p during the pre-crisis period, and by 0.26%p during the post-crisis period. However, considering remarkably rapid growth before the crisis, we can hardly say that the economy was wage-led in those days. By contrast, the demand effects of labor share seem significantly large in recent economic environment of much slower growth.
