Abstract
The enlisted firm of the KOSPI200 index is expected to effect a public confidence, increase in foreigner’s share, high volume of stock exchange and the value of stocks. In the empirical analysis, stock price was determined mainly based on accounting performance measures such as earnings. This stock price determination mechanism provided firms with incentives to manage earnings opportunistically in the KOSPI200 index revision. In other words, newly enlisted firm and exclusion firm may be likely to have a incentive to manage earnings before inclusion in the KOSPI200 index revision and after exclusion from the KOSPI200 index revision. This study empirically examines different pattern of earnings management following inclusion in or exclusion from the KOSPI200 index revision. Empirical findings are summarized as follows: First, enlisted firms of the KOSPI200 index show the lower discretionary accrual amounts than other firms. Second, newly enlisted firms of the KOSPI200 index revision show the positive discretionary accrual (and positive current discretionary accruals amounts) before newly enlisted years and the negative discretionary accrual amounts in newly enlisted years. Third, newly exclusion firms from the KOSPI200 index revision show no different pattern of earnings management.
