미국 뉴올리언스의 역사지구 흰개미 방제 사례와 시사점

흰개미는 우리나라 목조문화유산의 주요 손상 원인 중 하나이며 입지와 구조 등을 감안할 때 개별 건물이 아닌 공간 차원에서의 방제 전략이 필요하다. 이 논문에서는 미국 뉴올리언스의 프렌치 쿼터와 잭슨 배럭 역사지구에서 실시된 공간적 흰개미 관리 사례를 분석하여 국내 적용을 위한 시사점을 도출하고자 하였다. 그 결과 면적이 1 km2가 넘는 역사지구에서도 공간적 흰개미 방제의 적용이 가능하며, 주변 흰개미 군체의 재침입을 막고 낮은 흰개미 밀도를 유지하기 위해 지속적인 방제가 필요했다. 또한 넓은 면적에서 효과적인 흰개미 방제를 위해서는 단일 시행 주체가 주도적으로 방제 계획 수립과 실시를 담당해야 하며, 기술적으로는 지중매립형 고 내구성 흰개미 군체제거제나 지상형 군체제거제의 개발과 적용이 필요하다.
Abstract
Termites are one of the main causes of damage to Korea's wooden cultural heritage. To effectively prevent termite damage, areawide termite management is necessary. This paper attempts to derive implications for the application of areawide termite management to Korean cultural heritage by analyzing ex amples of areawide termite management in the French Quarter and Jackson Barracks historic district in New Orleans, Louisiana, USA. Areawide termite management can be applied in historic districts with an area of over 1 km2, and continuous control is required to prevent damage from re-invasion of termite colonies from the surrounding area. In addition, for effective termite control over a large area, a single implementing entity should take the lead in establishing and implementing the control plan. Durable in-ground termite bait and above-ground termite bait are optimal for colony elimination.
