Abstract

In India, a large number of cave temples were excavated in the Western Deccan area around the B.C.E. 2nd to 6th centuries. A number of Buddhist cave temples excavated in the 5th and 6th centuries were identified in Western Malwa, about 700 kilometers north of here. Among these stone cave temples, Dhamnar cave has the largest size and is in good condition. In Dhamnar Cave, 51 caves were opened separately into 4 counties, of which 8 Chaitya caves and 20 stupas were built in Cave in the south. This number is the largest in a single complex, including all of India, in- cluding Chaitya caves and stupas. All of the stupas in the Dhamnar Caves, except one stupa, are form of cylin- drical bases and circular double bases of the Western Deccan, with an unusual addition of a square base at the lower part that touches the surface. The square-base stylobate is characterized only by the Gandhara stupa. Fences were installed to isolate or protect the flatland temple’s stupa (Buddha) from the world(secular), and the cave temple omitted the fence be- cause the cave itself served as a fence. After that, the square-shaped stupa ap- peared in earnest, and columns were expressed on most of the stupa bases. As Buddhism declined around the 4th and 5th centuries in Gandhara, a new square-bodied stupa was built in Sindh, downstream of the Indus River, and Gujarat, India. A Large-scale square-shaped stupas were constructed in Western Malwa and the provinces in the middle of the transportation route connecting these provinces and inland India, especially in Damnar Caves. It re- minds me of the square -shaped of the stone stupa in Korea. In India, there is no example of a square-base stupa being built, but a new type of stupa was built in the Western Malwa region by adding the square base of Gandhara to the stupa type of the Western Deccan Caves.
