Abstract

By using AHP (Analytic Hierarchy Process), this study attempted toexplore relative importance and priority on criteria of public relations (PR)professionalism. The results of this study indicated that PR practitionersconsider the organizational level as the most important PR professionalismstandard at the first level, followed by the industry level andthe individual level. More specifically, at the second level, PR importanceperceived by dominant coalitions and clients in the organizational level, competence with the Advertising and Marketing department in the industrylevel, and research ability to examine PR programs in the individuallevel are highly evaluated as prominent elements of PRprofessionalism. By combining results at the first and second levels, wedetermined the top-five elements of PR professionalism, such as PR importanceperceived by the dominant coalition and clients, competencewith the Advertising and Marketing department, clear definition of PRroles within an organization, equal opportunity, and research ability to examinePR programs. Those results are not significantly different betweencorporate PR practitioners and PR agency practitioners. This study contributesto PR academia and industry by setting up developmental directions of PR professionalism in Korea.
