본 연구는 42개국, 737개의 관측치로 이루어진 패널자료를 이용하여, Gini 계수로 측정된 세계 여러 나라들의 소득불평등도를 결정하는 요인이 무엇인지 알아보고자 한다. Pooled OLS, 고정효과 모형, 랜덤효과 모형, 시스템 GMM의 방법을 이용하여 소득불평등 지표의 결정요인을 추정한 결과 (1) Kuznets 곡선이 완만하게 존재하는 것으로 나타났으며 (2) FTA효과는 유의하게 나타나지 않았다. 또한 (3) 무역의존도는 고소득국가에서는 소득불평등을 개선하는 방향으로 영향을 미치고 있으나 저소득국가에서는 소득불평등을 확대시키는 것으로 나타났다. (4) 정부지출과 투자가 GDP에서 차지하는 비중이 클수록 소득불평등이 완화되는 것으로 추정되었다.
Abstract
This study investigates the determinants of income inequality measured by Gini coefficients across countries and times with a panel data composed of 42 countries and 737 observations, focusing on the effects of FTA and Kuznets curve on the income inequality. From the empirical estimations using a pooled OLS, fixed-effect models, random-effect models, and a GMM, the followings are observed, (i) Kuznets' curve is existent, (ii) the effect of FTA is not significant, (iii) the openness has a different effect on the income inequality between high income countries and low income countries, and (iv) the share of government expenditures and the share of investment in real GDP have a negative effect on income inequality.
