본 연구는 중력모형을 사용하여 미국과의 FTA 발효 이후 회원국으로의 자본유입효과(FDI creation)를 규명하고자 한다. 이를 위해 현재 미국과의 FTA가 발효 중인 총 17개국의 1983년부터 2010년까지의 외국인 직접투자를 분석하였다. 아울러 직접투자의 원천을 미국과 미국 외 지역의 투자로 구분하여 각 투자의 특징들을 파악하였다. 도출된 결론은 다음과 같다. 첫째, 미국과의 FTA는 회원국들로의 자본유입을 증가시키지만 그 효과는 다른 변수들에 비해 상대적으로 작은 것으로 확인되었다. 둘째, 미국 외 지역으로부터의 직접투자유입은 FTA 발효 자체보다는 회원국의 시장규모에 훨씬 더 큰 영향을 받는 것으로 확인되었다. 마지막으로, 투자의 원천을 미국과 미국 외 지역으로 구분한 두 경우 모두에서 아메리카대륙에 속한 회원국으로 투자가 편중되는 지역적 편의(regional bias)가 관찰되었다.
Abstract
We examine the investment creation effect of US FTA on 17 member countries for period of 1983～2010. In an attempt to understand the features of FDI into member countries, we decompose the sources of FDI: from US region and non-US region. The major finding and implication of this paper are as follows. First, FTA with US increases FDI into member countries significantly but the size is not so great. Rather, market size of member countries is a much more important determinant of attracting FDI from US and non-US countries. Finally, the result shows the regional bias that FDIs have been concentrated toward member countries in the continent of America.
