시장지배력을 이용한 기업의 시장별 가격설정(Pricing-To-Market) 전략은 경제 전체의 자원을 비효율적으로 배분하여 생산성과 성장을 저해하는 요인이 된다. 본 연구는 우리 경제의 대외개방이 경쟁의 촉진을 통해 이러한 비효율적 자원배분을 어느 정도나 개선하였는지를 정량적으로 평가하였다. 이를 위해 시장 개방의 경쟁촉진 효과를 설명할 수 있는 모형을 소개하고 모형 내 분포와 모수를 우리나라 경제 상황에 맞도록 조정하여 시뮬레이션 분석을 실시하였다. 분석의 결과 개방은 시장규모를 확대할 뿐 만 아니라 경쟁을 촉진하고 기업 및 산업 간 마크업의 격차를 줄여 자원을 더 효율적인 방향으로 재분배하는데 기여한 것으로 파악되었다. 구체적으로 만약 폐쇄경제에서 2010년의 개방 수준으로 우리나라 경제가 이동할 경우 발생되는 제조업 총생산성의 증가효과 중에서 30～35% 가량은 자원배분의 개선을 통해 발생한 것으로 추정되었다.
Abstract
This paper quantitatively evaluates how much trade openness in Korea has alleviated the resource misallocation through competitions between domestic and foreign firms. To this end, we employ the pricing-to-market model by Atkeson and Burstein (2008) and Edmond et al. (2015) and calibrate the model to fit the distributions of number of producers as well as their market shares in Korean manufacturing in 2010. Our finding suggests that, out of the total productivity gains obtained when the Korean manufacturing moves from autarky to the level of trade liberalization in 2010, about 30～35% of the gains can be attributed to the improvement of resource allocation through import competitions and subsequent reductions of markup heterogeneity among domestic producers. Thus, we confirm that the competition-driven resource reallocation across firms is an important channel through which trade openness can contribute to the growth of aggregate productivity.
