본 논문에서는 다국적기업의 시각에서 선택 가능한 입지후보지간 투자매력도를 계산하여 우리나라의 대외경쟁력을 가늠해보고자 하였다. 주요 국가별 매력도를 도출하기 위해 독점적 경쟁모형을 구축하여 각 생산지에서 기업들이 기대할 수 있는 잠재이윤을 계산한 후 실제 투자유치 실적과 비교해보았다. 분석 결과 1990년대 후반에 걸쳐 한국은 전자제품의 생산에 관한 한 매우 매력적인 투자처였던 것으로 나타났으며, 외환위기를 전후하여 경쟁국간의 투자유치 잠재력 순위에 있어 두드러진 변화는 감지되지 않았다.
Abstract
This paper attempts to measure a country’s ability to lure foreign direct investment. In contrast to previous studies where only realized investments are analyzed, a monopolistic-competition model is built to help calculate potential profits of firms at a multitude of candidate locations in which a manufacturing facility can operate. The results suggest that, in strictly economic terms, Korea had maintained a leading position as a possible assembly site throughout the second half of 1990s, at least in the consumer electronics industry. The rankings of attractiveness are then checked against the actual performances of competing countries in the Southeast Asia to yield some interesting policy implications.
