Abstract

This study examines asymmetric volatility among the Korean, Chinese, and American stock markets. using daily data of each country for Korean KOSPI, Chinese Shanghai A, and American S&P 500 for the period from January 1, 2001 to May 31, 2011. In addition, this paper investigates empirically the asymmetric effects on volatility of automobile, banking, and IT industry indexes. The main results of the empirical analysis with the volatility in Merton's model are as follow. At first, it exists the asymmetric volatility on KOSPI, Shanghai A and industrial stock indexes. Second, the negative volatility is bigger than positive volatility in Korean stock markets. Third, the unexpected shock from the American stock market has positive influence on the banking industry index. And the asymmetric volatility of automobile industry is bigger than other industries.
