Abstract

This study estimates a production function with capital-skill complementarity and evaluates the role of skilled workers in regional income difference in Korea. For that, we utilize a panel data of 16 regions over the period from 1999 to 2019. The estimation result is consistent with the prediction of the model, indicating that the higher ratio of skilled workers is significantly associated with higher regional income. On the other hand, the association of unskilled workers with regional income is not statistically significant or much weaker that skilled workers. We also find that skilled workers play more significant role in Seoul than other regions. The result is robust to the alternative assumption of endogenous movement of workers across regions.
