Abstract
The purpose of this study is to investigate the mode effect, which is the difference in results between the two survey methods in sequential mixed-mode survey, the web survey and the face-to-face interview survey. The mode effect can be separated into the selection effect, the difference in sample by their selection of survey method, and the measurement effect, the result solely due to the differences in methods. For this purpose, we set up a comparison group of homogeneous face-to-face survey method, together with the sample of mixed-mode survey and applied the Extended MM Comparison method from Vannieuwenhuyze and Looseveldt (2012). In the analysis of 61 items related to family, safety, labor, income and consumption, the selection effect was mostly insignificant, but the measurement effect was shown significance in 31 items (p < .05). In general, web surveys tend to reveal more undesirable behaviors and show more critical views on social issues, whereas face-to-face interviews tend to show more favorable attitude and are more likely to choose neutral or no change. Based on the results, we discussed the occurrence of mode effects, non-response errors, costs, and selection of survey subjects when conducting the mixed mode surveys.
