Abstract

Yuseo was a document used to deliver royal command to the local officials in place of naejeonsosik starting from the 25th year of King Sejong (1443). The fact that yuseo began to be used instead of naejeonsosik indicates that yuseowas established as a royal command delivery document. The act of giving a royal order to local officials was called hayu , and yuseo that was issued for that purpose could be classified as hayuyuseo . Not long after yuseo was used, another document that delivered royal command to local officials issued by the Office of Royal Secretariat named yuji also began to be used. It seems that yujioriginated from byeolji which was attached to yuseo by the Office of Royal Secretariat, and developed as an independent document. Due to the inconvenience of all the process ranging from the writing and delivery of yuseoto the reception of it, there was a need to revive a similar document to naejeonsosik that was once issued as an official document, and that occurred in the name of yuji . Since King Gwanghaegun’s accession to the throne, yuseo also began to be used when there was an act of jeonyu . Jeonyu referred to an act of delivering royal documents such as yuseo , yuji , bidap to officials of Supreme Council or reclusive scholars by dispatching royal historians and royal secretaries. A particular yuseo issued in this case could be classified as jeonyuyuseo . In Diaries of the Royal Secretariat , however, the royal document carried by the dispatched official for jeonyu is described as donyu , byeoryu , seongyu , andyuji instead of yuseo . A collective term for these documents could be yuji . Yujiwas a document which only contained the king’s order with no introductory and concluding parts as well as no royal seal stamped. This form of yuji reflects its purpose. Since the king needed to quickly deliver his earnest intentions to officials of Supreme Council or reclusive scholars, more simplified document than yuseo such as yuji was preferred. Hunyuyuseo was a document issued for disciplining and admonishing multiple people and thus it was different from other yuseo issued to an individual. There existed a royal document for the people called gyoseo , but most gyoseo were written by jijegyo instead of the king and adhered to strictness in its format and contents. Therefore, a more liberal document was needed in terms of format and contents whether it was written by the king himself or by an official, which resulted in the development of hunyuyuseo . Given that hunyuyuseo was issued for multiple people, it did not fit into the usage of other yuseo that aimed for an individual. That is why yuneum was created to replace hunyuyuseo . Yuneum began to be used since the reign of King Yeongjo. Yuseojibo was used in yuneum until it was replaced by gyujangjibo along with the foundation of Gyujanggak Royal Library by King Jeongjo, allowing yuneum to become an entirely independent document in distinction from yuseo.
