Abstract

The hypothesis on the learning effect of international trade implies that exporting companies gain incentives for technology acquisition and innovation by competing with foreign companies or experiencing in the world market, and thus the learning effect leads to productivity improvement. This study provides a micro-dynamic analysis on the linkage between international trade and firm performance by using the micro-level panel data composed of 1,146 domestic listed companies in the manufacturing sector for the period 1980∼2012. The dynamic panel analysis shows that the trade propensity has a dynamic linkage with the firms performance. Particularly, the learning effect of trade has a positive dynamic linkage with increase in sales and increase in labor productivity, which are considered as the performance of firms. The dynamic relationship between trade propensity and firm performance is found stronger and more significant after the IMF Foreign Exchange Crisis than before the Crisis. In addition, the relationship between trade propensity and firm performance shows heterogeneity across industry sectors, indicating significance in technology-intensive sectors such as machinery, metals, electronics, telecommunications and semiconductors. Therefore, our analysis evidences the learning effect of trade, which is centered on technology intensive industries after the IMF Foreign Exchange Crisis.
