본고는 한국학중앙연구원 장서각에 소장된 고전소설 『유덕전』의 창작 방식과 의의 를 고찰한 것이다. 이 작품은 두 가지 특징을 갖는다. 첫째, 남성 영웅소설의 유형성 을 그대로 수용하면서도 여성 영웅의 활약을 집중적으로 드러낸다. 둘째, ‘부처님 공양한 덕에 천자가 된 사람’이라는 설화를 모방하여 판타지적 서사를 구현한다. 『유덕전』은 아버지 유현의 서사에 아들 유경태의 서사가 결합되어 있는데, 후반부 유경태의 서사를 통해 통치자의 자질에 대한 진지한 성찰을 보인다. 평범한 백성이지만 善治 능력이 있는 유경태가 적통성은 있지만 부덕한 왕을 죽이고 황제가 됨으로써, 善政德治의 중요성을 피력한다. 따라서 이 작품의 창작 의의는 영웅소설사의 자장 안에서 올바른 정치에 대한 문제를 제기하고 있다는 점일 것이다.
Abstract
This paper examines the production process and significance of the classic novel Yudeokjeon, which is housed in the Jangseogak Archives of the Academy of Korean Studies. This work has two remarkable features: First, it extensively describes the achievements of female protagonists while still acknowledging the qualities typically associated with male hero novels. Second, it incorporates elements of fantasy narrative by emulating the narrative technique of “a man who became emperor through an offering to Buddha.” Yudeokjeon interweaves the narratives of its protagonists, Yu Hyeon and his son, Yu Kyeong-tae. This structure allows for an in-depth exploration of the qualities necessary for effective leadership, especially through the story of Yu Kyeong-tae in the second half. The story emphasizes the importance of good governance and ethical leadership through Yu Gyeong-tae, a person with exceptional skills in good governance who ascends to the throne as emperor by dethroning a morally corrupt king. Therefore, the significance of this work is that it raises questions about righteous governance in the context of heroic literature.
