Abstract

Jang Chil-Seon-cheon is a heroic novel about the life story of Jang Chil-Seon. This manu·script has a transcription, which dates to ‘丁巳’, it is estimated the year 1917. And due to the distinct characteristics of the Gyeong-Sang provincial dialect in the phonemes, grammar, and vocabulary, it is assumed that the manuscript moved out of and was distributed from the Gyeong-Sang region. Jang Chil-Seon-cheon faithfully keeps the heroic life form, but does apply slight changes to the heroic novel structure and can be considered a complementary work when viewed with the similar settings or illustrations found all over in novels such as Jang Pung-Un-cheon, So Dae-Seong-cheon, Yu Chung-Ryul-cheon, and Jo Ung-cheon. Also, because the narration is developed around the conquering of a situation in which there was a crumbling of societal status and the growth and development of the family, it may be classified with Jang Pung-Un-cheon. Jang Chil-Seon-cheon distinctively embodies the form of the economically incompetent Yangban. Due to this, it allows for various confirmations about the economic situation of the time. Represented here by the father, the “reality of society” is the conflict encountered by the main character and is the fundamental issue suggested by this work. In this regard, the issue of this work is quite serious and reality-oriented, but doubt arises regarding this point as the realization of this issue is not consistently addressed through the entire narration. This is arises from how the narration of Jang Chil-Seon-cheon develops following the logic of gratitude. In this work, the main character acts vigorously according to the logic of gratitude, and this develops in the narration and through the younger sister of the main character who takes on a major role. And, in the end, this work contains temporary conflicts following this logic, but continuous conflicts of this nature that penetrate the narration are absent. Finally, the absence of these conflicts serves to diminish the hardships faced by the main character. With this, the formation of the main character is depersonalized and the manners in which problems are resolved cease at a simple level. In this way, the characteristics of Jang Chil-Seon-cheon are limited.
