Abstract
This study explores the aesthetic interests and literary activities of Gangsan Yi Seogu (薑山 李書九, 1754~1825) during his formative years, focusing on Jamun sihain-eon (自問是何人言) to shed light on the development of his early literary style. Jamun sihain-eon, which contains seventeen pieces composed before he turned twenty-two, vividly reflects Yi Seogu’s literary and aesthetic orientation, particularly in works such as Mukgak sipbal (黙刻十跋), Gigaek sojeon (碁客小傳), and the preface to Sowanjeong gumchung chomok gwon (素玩亭禽蟲草木卷序). Mukgak sipbal demonstrates Yi’s refined connoisseurship rooted in the scholarly and artistic tradition inherited from his ancestor Yi U (1637~1693), a collector of epigraphic rubbings and paintings. Through his critical prose, Yi transformed the experience of viewing and collecting art into intellectual reflection—a foundation that later shaped his identity as a distinguished art collector. Gigaeok sojeon, written in biographical form, depicts the life of the Go master Jeong Unchang, presenting the game not as a mere pastime but as an object of moral and aesthetic contemplation. The work reveals Yi’s early effort to render the world of skilled artistry into a literary form. In the preface to Sowanjeong gimchung chamok gwon, Yi explores the aesthetic value of nature by closely observing and versifying birds, animals, insects, grass, and trees, transforming his personal experience of raising parrots and cranes into a work of literary expression. Taken together, these works reveal that Yi Seogu’s early writings were not simply expressions of personal taste but the result of sustained literary exploration grounded in lived experience. Furthermore, his aesthetic interests and literary pursuits deepened within the collective context of the Baektapsisa (White Pagoda Poetry Society), providing a valuable perspective for examining the interplay of taste, art, and literature in the urban culture of eighteenth-century Seoul.
