Abstract
This study, using multiple life table techniques, describes whether and when the disabled get married. In doing so, it further examines the differences of transition rate and timing by the types of disability and gender. Past studies tend to focus on the prevalence of marriage among the disabled or the meanings and individual practices of marriage for the disabled. Little is known about the basic statistics concerning marriage transition among the disabled. The study utilized different sources of data. The age of first marriage, types of disability and gender were drawn from the 2017 Korean Survey of Disability. The mortality rate of persons with disabilities was imported from the previous research of Kim et al(2017). These data allowed us to construct the multiple life table containing the probability of remaining unmarried using 10-year intervals. The life table set up the starting age at 20 and limited its cases to those who were born with disability or become disabled prior to that age. As for the types of disability, the cases include physical disabilities (516), visual/ hearing impaired (289) and intellectually impaired (307). The results show that the majority of the physically handicapped and visually/ hearing impaired were married(I think you mean “linked”) and their ages at marriage concentrated in the subjects’ 20s and 30s. In the meanwhile, the intellectually handicapped are often left unmarried for life and their ages at the time of marriage are dispersed. As for gender differences, the age at marriage is lower for females than for males. In particular, among the intellectually disabled, males are more likely to remain single for life than females. The results suggest that marriage for the disabled varies according to the types of disability and gender, requiring a special attention from academics and policy makers.
