Abstract

In general, the purpose of the existence of the military is to protect the lives and property of the people from external threats. The Republic of Korea's military is developing and implementing character education programs to equip soldiers with the right image of a soldier and a healthy citizen by upholding desirable values and attitudes toward life. However, the current does not effectively practise a program that can internalize the character competency of MZ-generation soldiers. Therefore, various studies should be conducted to internalize the virtues necessary for character education of soldiers. The purpose of the study was to explore and propose a liberal arts and humanities education program for strengthening the character competency of soldiers in the future society. The method of the study was a literature review. The teaching-learning activities presented in this study were applied to the ‘collaborative learning by linking flipped learning’ model. The study results were as follows: Firstly, the theoretical background of the study was examined to focus on the core competencies and talents of the future society, the necessity of liberal arts and humanities education and character competencies, strengthening the future character competencies of soldiers, and the liberal arts reading culture program, the practical applicability of teaching and learning activities was explored. Secondly, the liberal arts and humanities education (reading culture) program was designed, developed, and presented to strengthen the character competency of soldiers in the future society. In conclusion, it was expected that the liberal arts and humanities education program for strengthening the soldier's character competency presented based on the theory explored in this study will be helpful in ‘developing and expanding self-consciousness, forming smooth interpersonal relationships, and promoteing community spirit’. As a subject of follow-up research for the study linking and expanding practice of an experience-oriented character education program in connection with the local community and university, and evaluation research for measure the effect of the participant's character competency were proposed.
