Abstract
It has already been five years since a number of ornamental roof tiles of the early Joseon dynasty were discovered on a beach in Taean in South Chungcheongdo province. In the meantime archaeologists have compared the shape, compositional features, and method of producing these tiles with those found at the Sungnyemun Gate and the Yangju Hoeamsa Temple Site, and have dated these Taean chuidu and japsang (“ornamental roof tiles of Taean”) to around the fifteenth century. They have also studied the detailed name based on the records contained in the 『Uigwe』 (Royal Protocols of State Rituals). In addition, regarding the background to the Taean chuidu and japsang excavated from the intertidal zone of Yangjam ri, it is presumed that they were produced by a tile factory in Seoul (Waseo) and then transported by sea for use in the construction of royal buildings in the provinces. However, the ship carrying the tiles sank off the coast of Taean in a maritime accident, which makes it difficult to clearly identify their final destination. This academic research trend may be attributed to the biased research results of scholars who are fascinated by the splendid and elaborate external features of Taean chuidu. Furthermore, it cannot be denied that there has been considerable negligence both in the analysis of the location of the site where the ornamental roof tiles were excavated and in the review and understanding of the archaeological sedimentary process. Therefore, based on the results of the analysis of the appearance of the artifacts excavated from the intertidal zone of Yangjam ri and the archaeological stratigraphy review, it may be concluded that the ornamental roof tiles of Taean were intentionally deposited in the intertidal zone. By examining similar cases from the Silla and Joseon periods, it can be seen that the ornamental roof tiles of the early Joseon dynasty have a deep correlation with the rain-praying ritual at the national ritual of Jungsa. In addition, through an analytical review of the Chungcheongdo province tour records in the 『Taejongsilrok』 (Annals of King Taejong), it has been determined that Taean Chuidu and japsang were sacrificial offerings used in state rites, such as the Namhaesin rite attended by King Taejong of Joseon. Accordingly, it is inferred that the ornamental roof tiles of Taean were not only special tiles used to decorate the roofs of palaces and to symbolize the king's authority, but also symbols of state consciousness chosen by the political elite of the early Joseon dynasty. In addition, they served to realistically demonstrate the independent existence of the traditional state in order to justify the ruling order
