Abstract

This study provides an overview of maritime activities in the waters around Wando during the premodern period and examines their historical significance. It also explores the departure points, ports of call, routes, and maritime trade activities associated with the ‘Wando ships’, which serve as key indicators of Wando's maritime position. The waters around Wando formed a crucial maritime hub and starting point for sea routes connecting the West Sea and South Sea coasts, as well as Jeju Island, from the early eighth century - when Admiral Jang Bogo was active - through the Mongol invasions and Yuan interference during the Goryeo period. Furthermore, on a broader scale, Wando was a key gateway to the maritime routes linking Korea with China and Japan. Due to its strategic importance, Wando was devastated by Japanese pirate raids during the late Goryeo and early Joseon periods. Consequently, discussions on strengthening the maritime defenses in the Wando region continued after the establishment of the Joseon dynasty. Islands such as Cheongsando and Yeoseodo, located in open waters, became pirate strongholds, while others, like Bogildo and Soando, fell victim to repeated attacks. In response, Joseon established naval bases (Sugu-jin) along the coast, including Dallyangjin and Madojin, and eventually extended them to include offshore islands during the mid-to-late Joseon period. The Wando Ship, which sank off Yaksan Island in the Wando waters, was loaded at and departed from a port near Haenam, a major celadon production site. It then passed through the inland sea of Wando before heading toward the eastern part of Jeollanam do and Gyeongsang-do. Based on a re-evaluation of existing evidence, this study suggests excluding Jeju Island as a major port of call for the Wando Ship, which had previously been considered an important port of call. If the Wando Ship had not sunk, it would likely have docked at ports that provided access to major administrative and commercial centers along the southern coast, such as Jinju-mok, Seungpyeong-gun, and Geumju.
