Abstract

The purpose of this study is, first, to examine what values and soldier spirit Ahn Jung-geun developed in his volunteer army activities; second, to analyze which of those values and soldier spirit were most evident; and third, to examine the values and soldier spirit that he displayed. Ultimat-ely, it aims to improve the military’s combat power by suggesting things to practice in order to have these values. The research method is limited to Ahn Jung-geun’s autobiography, ‘Ahn Eung-chil History’ and ‘Eastern Peace Theory’, as well as the ink and trial records he left behind, as well as Maeil Shinbo, a newspaper at the time, and the Army’s core values of ‘dedication to the country, fulfillment of responsibility, and mutual respect’. It was analyzed using the three major elements of military values and the six major elements of military value : honor, loyalty, courage, belief in sure victory, non-retirement in battle, and love for patriotism. As a result, all three core values stood out, and honor, courage, and love for patriotism stood out in the military values. In addition, it was found that justice acts as a source of such things. Therefore, in order to have these values of Ahn Jung-geun, one must lead by example in everything, complete a given mission to the end, help comrades in need, be fair in military spirit, take on challenges without fear of failure, and help the residents in their difficulties. Justice must be honest and faithful, adhere to morals and norms, and have the courage to stand against injustice.
