Abstract
The purpose of this study is first to examine the relationship between Admiral Yi Sun-sin and the six categories of the Army Leadership Model (character, leadership, military expertise, capacity development, leadership, and achievement), second to analyze which of the six categories is most frequently demonstrated, and third to suggest practices for military officers to utilize the leadership he demonstrated, ultimately improving the combat power of the Army. The research method was to analyze literature based on his ‘handwritten diary’ and various reports, ‘Yi Chung-mugong Jeonseo (War Diary)’ compiled by order of King Jeongjo, and ‘Yi Chung-mugong Haengnok’ written by his nephew Lee Bun. The results of the study show that although Yi Sun-sin was a naval commander, he was a ‘righteous, competent, and dedicated warrior’, the ideal leader of the Army, and a great leader who perfectly embodied the six categories of the Army Leadership Model. His spirit of ‘if you die, you will live, if you live, you will die’ ignited the passion of his subordinates, drew out their abilities to the fullest and made them voluntarily devote themselves. In addition, among the six categories, character and military expertise were prominently displayed. In order to emulate his outstanding leadership, he suggested things for military officers to practice, and through them, it is necessary to seek victory in battle with the attitude of ‘sacrifice for the country.’
