본 연구는 강재구 소령의 군인정신이 어떻게 형성·내면화되었으며, 그의 군인정신이 대한민국 국군에 미친 영향을 분석한다. 1965년 10월 4일, 수도사단 1연대 3대대 9중대장이었던 강재구 대위는 베트남 파병을 앞두고 실시된 수류탄 투척 훈련 중, 한 병사가 실수로 떨어뜨린 수류탄을 몸으로 덮쳐 부하들의 생명을 구하고 산화했다. 이후 그는 군을 넘어 국민적 영웅으로 추앙받았으나, 그의 희생적 행위만 부각되었고 정작 그가 어떻게 군인정신을 형성하고 실천했는지에 대한 연구는 부족했다. 이에 본 연구는 강재구가 생도 시절부터 작성한 일기를 분석하여 그의 가치관과 군인정신이 어떻게 내면화되고 실천되었는지를 추적하였다. 그 결과, 그의 군인정신은 단순한 희생이 아니라 명예·충성·용기·필승의 신념 등 군의 핵심 가치를 구현한 사례로 평가할 수 있었다. 또한, 강재구의 군인정신이 단순한 영웅담을 넘어 부대의 사기와 단결력을 높이고, 군의 리더십 모델을 정립하는 데 실질적인 역할을 했음을 확인할 수 있었다. 결국 강재구의 군인정신은 개인적 차원을 넘어 부대 차원의 가치로 확산되었던 것이다. 이러한 연구 결과를 바탕으로, 본 연구는 강재구의 군인정신이 오늘날 군과 사회에서 어떻게 계승·발전될 수 있는지를 고찰하며, 그 현대적 의의를 제시한다.
Abstract
This study examines the formation and internalization of Major Kang Jae-gu’s military spirit and its impact on the Republic of Korea Army. On October 4, 1965, while serving as the commander of the 9th Company, 3rd Battalion, 1st Regiment of the Capital Division, Captain Kang was overseeing a grenade-throwing exercise in preparation for deployment to Vietnam. During the drill, a soldier accidentally dropped a live grenade. Without hesitation, Kang shielded it with his body, sacrificing his life to save his subordinates. Although he was subsequently honored as a national hero, much of the recognition focused solely on his final act of sacrifice, while the development and embodiment of his military spirit remained largely unexamined. To address this gap, this study analyzes Kang’s diaries to trace how his values—including honor, loyalty, courage, and an unwavering commitment to victory—were cultivated and practiced throughout his military career. The findings indicate that Kang’s military spirit was not merely a personal conviction but a guiding principle that shaped unit cohesion, discipline, and morale. His legacy extended beyond individual heroism, influencing leadership models and contributing to the institutional values of the Republic of Korea Army. By recontextualizing Kang’s military spirit beyond his ultimate sacrifice, this study highlights its broader significance in fostering organizational resilience and leadership within the military. Based on these findings, it further explores how his principles can be preserved and adapted in contemporary military and societal contexts.
