Abstract

The Korean troop dispatch to Vietnam War was the very first overseas dispatch of combat units since the establishment of the Korean army. The purpose of this article is to observe the effect of being awarded the Medal of Merit, which was given to combat merits, on mental strength improvement, which is the core of intangible combat strategies. Korean military operations like Ojakgyo and Honggildong Military Operations during the Vietnam War were conducted twice in 1967. Eagle Project was implemented twice, in 1970 and 1971, under the command of the commander Seho Lee. During the Vietnam War, the Korean army sent 31,060 soldiers to operate four military operations from 1967 to 1971. A total of 150 Korean soldiers were killed, and 460 were wounded. 2,726 enemies were killed, and 566 got captured as war prisoners during this war. The timely reward of the Military Merit Award is very critical. A total of 736 distinguished soldiers (2.37%) were rewarded for participating in the military operation. This is lower than the award rate of the merit award in the Korean War(3.7%), with 6.7% of the total merit award in the Vietnam War. This paper tried to investigate how military rewards could improve soldiers' mental strength on the Vietnam War battlefield by analyzing the awarded soldiers who were given merit awards. It also examined the military operations like Ojakgyo and Honggildong and Eagle Project, which were operated twice, by referring to the literature records such as battle reports of troops who participated in the war, documents from the Army Military Research Institute and Defense Military Compilation Institute, and war memoirs of a commander who commended such operations from 1967 to 1971 while Korean government dispatched troops to Vietnam.
