Abstract
This study aims to explore Indo-Malay cultural conflicts from various perspectives and uncover implications for multicultural music education. Beginning with a review of the current literature on Indo-Malay conflict, the study continues with the reflections and critical analysis of four educators, native to Indonesia and Malaysia. We propose that their varying responses can be attributed to the following reasons: Firstly, cultural conflicts are influenced by socio-political conflicts. Secondly, there are many standards for evaluating what constitutes traditional music. Thirdly, opinions vary as to the best approach to preserving cultural heritages. Lastly, the global citizenship characteristics of empathy and understanding are required to foster the strength to resolve cultural conflicts. In conclusion, this study finds that the dynamic phenomenon of different musical traditions, especially as related to conflicts, provides us with an opportunity to teach critical thinking skills.
