19세기 후반 시작된 미국의 영화산업은 자유경쟁체제를 거쳐 1908 년에 이르면에디슨사{Edison Company)를 중심으로 영화의 제작 • 배급 • 상영을 통제하는 완전한 독점체제를 구축하게 된다. 이가 바로 1908 년 12 월에 만들어진 영화특허회사(Motion Picture Patents Comp뻐y, MPPC) 이다. 이러한독점체제를 피하기 위해 그리고 영화제작의 편의를 위해 일단의 제작사들-독립제작사{Independents)- 이 캘리포니아의 할리우드로 이동하게 되었대1907 년 이후) 영회특허회사는 독립제작자들과의 일련의 소송으로 석퇴하게 되고 독립제작사들이 영화산업의 중심이 되었다. 한편, 박람회장, 보드빌 극장, 이동 극장 등에서 상영하던 영회는 1905 년 니켈로디언이ickelodeon)이라는소규모극장에서 상영하게 된다. 니켈로디언은후에 미국영화산업의 중심이 되는 여러 사엽기들의 사업적 기반이 되었다. 그러나 니켈로디언을 타락의 장소로 본 많은 종교집단과 사회사업가들에 의해 쇠퇴하게 되었다. 영화특허회사와 니켈로디언은 단명하였지만, 미국영화산업에 지대한 영향을 미쳤다. 영화특허회사는 영화라는 매체를 산업으로 만들고 그 표준을 만들었으며, 니켈로디언은 관객을 만들었으며, 영화를 상영하였다. 또한 산업과 문화적 현상으로서 영화의 성장을 자극하였다.
Abstract
In the latter half of the 19th century, the American film industry started to develop it. In 1908, the film industry took free competition system to produce, distribute and show a movie at Edison Company and to construct perfect monopoly system that was made by Motion Picturε Patents Company (MPPC) founded in December 1908. Some of producers, in other words, independents moved to Hollywood, California to avoid the monopoly system and produce films easily and conveniently (after the year of 1907). The MPPC dwindled because of a series of suits of independents so that independents played an important role in the film industry. On the other hand, exposition ground, vaudevillian theater and movable theater, etc showed movies: In 1905, a small-sized theater named Nickelodeon showed movies. Nickelodeon became business base of many businessmen who played an important role in the American film industrγ. However, a lot of religious groups and social workers rεgarded Nickεlodeon as a corrupt place to let it dwindle. The MPPC and Nickelodeon could survive themselves for a short time, and they had great influence upon the American film industry. The MPPC produced a media of the film to make an industry and its standards, while Nickelodeon did spectators to show movies. And, industrial and cultural phenomenon could expedite growth of films.
